Things to consider when designing a bathroom for kiddos!

We have kids' bathroom renos on the brain so we thought what better time to share with you some things we always consider when we are designing a bathroom for the little ones in your lives!

Bathrooms see a lot of traffic, especially for families with little kiddos who need to be washed up throughout the day. *immediately pictures sticky fingers, food everywhere, and colouring gone wrong* If you are in the thick of this season of life right now, it may feel like you’ll never have a clean bathroom again, however, that won’t last forever.

In the meantime we can share some tips with you to help you design a bathroom that is built with kiddos in mind & will grow with them as they age.

Our Kids Bathroom Tips!

  1. Large format tile flooring! When you are selecting your tile flooring aim for a 12x24 tile option. Think large tile = less grout lines. Less grout lines = less cleaning. Are we speaking your language now? There are so many great 12x24 tiles out there in various styles - our favourite is a slate like finish in a light creamy gray, medium gray or charcoal! This option not only looks good everywhere but, it is a timeless selection that won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

  2. Protect those walls! A wainscoting or a tiled wall detail is a great way to add an extra layer of protection to your bathroom walls. The reality is, water is going to get all over the place so adding a layer of protection between the splashing and the drywall will provide longevity to the space and help slow-down any major repairs from water damage.

  3. Think about the future! While your toddler may not need a double vanity with lots of storage and counter space, your future teenager will! When deciding to renovate a space keep the future of the space and its users in mind. And if you stick with the single vanity, pick the one with the most storage and the most counter space. I promise you will be thankful there is a space to plop the toddlers on for teeth brushing and eventually for all of your teens products!

  4. Pick a bathtub that will allow for shower / tub glass in the future. While your kiddo is little and you are helping them bathe, a shower curtain (or no curtain) is definitely the easiest way to go and there are some cute ones out there to choose from! As your child ages and isn’t in need of a helping hand any longer, adding shower / tub glass to the bathroom can really help with water dripping out of the tub and the mildew that can build up with curtains (plus there is no shower curtain clinging to you while you try to wash your body…IKYK). While you can 100% go the custom glass route if your space requires it, there are a ton of prefab options on the market these days that are great quality for not too high of a price point!
