Our 2024 Design Trend Predictions

Every year we get so excited seeing fellow designers call out the dreamy design predictions they anticipate for the new year. If we had to summarize what we are seeing for 2024 in three words they would be cozy, unique and warm. SIGN👏🏼 ME 👏🏼UP!

Let’s get into what our design team at At Home Co. is predicting for design this year!

Bring on the wood finishes! The luxurious cottage feel has arrived to make spaces feel warmer and more handcrafted. This trend will bring a sense of nature into homes, making them feel more organic and earthy. The use of wood finishes will be seen in millwork, cabinetry, panelled ceilings and furniture. Where we would have typically painted the wood finishes bright and white in the past, we are now staining and remaining true to the woods original character. Amber Interiors “Are We There Yet” Project did this so well!

Okay, I can hear you thinking… “but won’t wood cabinetry be boring”? Not if it is paired with the trend of fluted cabinetry!! Fluted cabinetry is a gorgeous detailing that can be add to your cabinetry and furniture. We truly expect to see so much fluted details in 2024! So, what the heck is it? Fluted cabinetry is a type of furniture design that features vertical grooves or channels on the surface. This design adds texture and depth to a room, giving it a unique and interesting look. If we could only pick one piece of millwork to add fluting to in your home it would hands down be your kitchen island. Hello gorgeous! The Lifestyled Co. did exactly that in their stunning ‘Project 64th Build’ and it is chefs kiss 😘

A trend that is going to carry on from 2023 is the use of deep, rich colours like burgundy, forest green, and muddy neutrals to create a cozy atmosphere. These colours add depth and warmth to a room, making it feel more inviting. Bye-bye all white spaces, hello colour! We are seeing these gorgeous colours used in all elements of interior design such as furniture, textiles, accent walls and millwork to create a dramatic effect.

Chris loves Julia was one of the designers we saw embrace this trend in 2023 and of course, nails it every single time! We saw Julia using these incredible colours in their primary bedroom, their recent powder room project, their rich green home office space and their family movie room!

This year they are already planning a burgundy mudroom for their home! Follow along with them and see all these dreamy projects we just mentioned here!

One trend that we are really excited about is maximalism! Surprised? I didn’t think so. 😉 When decorating your homes this year you will be seeing many designers like ourselves going full-steam-ahead with wallpaper, gallery walls, and coloured furniture.

This trend is all about embracing bold, vibrant, and unique designs. Gallery walls with an array of art pieces will add personality to a room, while wallpaper with bold prints will create a statement. And yes, we will convince you to wallpaper your ceiling. You’re welcome in advance.

Post pandemic everyone had the itch to finally redesign the spaces in their homes where they spent the most of their time like the living room, kitchen, your bedrooms and bathrooms. Now that we are 3 years out of that whirlwind of a time and the main spaces in your home are refreshed, we are seeing a growing trend of focusing on designing the "other" rooms within your home. Instead of only designing the core spaces in your home, designers will be focusing on spaces like your mudroom, pantry or butler's pantry, home offices and heck, maybe even a meditation space. These rooms will be designed to be functional yet stylish, making them a comfortable space to spend time in.

This last trend we are going to talk about today we debated not including in the blog because we go back and forth on it… Mixed backsplashes. Are you team yay or team nay? Here is the thing, it is so easy for this trend to look cheap & kitchy however, but when it is done right - it is oh so good. Things to keep in mind if you are going to try this trend and want it to stand the test of time:

  • Choose colours that complement each other.

  • You can mix patterns and textures to add depth and interest to a room.

  • Use a neutral palette as the base, you can add pops of colour through accessories and decor items.

Our biggest tip if you are going to give the mixed backsplash trend a whirl is to have your base be a waterfall countertop. This is when the stone you use for your counter is carried up the wall to create continuity. Stop your waterfall counter backsplash at half way or three-quarters of the way up the wall and pair it with a backsplash tile in the same tone range to best achieve the mixed backsplash trend. A bonus is you create a shelf out of your countertop stone where you cut the waterfall backsplash off, when you give the one backsplash an end point and the other a starting point. Trade Mark Interiors does this perfectly in their “White Elephant” Project.

To sum it up, 2024 is predicted to be an exciting year for interior design. With these design predictions you can create a warm, cozy, and unique home that reflects your personality and style.
