Cook or be Cooked: 5 Things to Consider When Designing Your Dream Kitchen

Designing a kitchen can be a daunting task.

There are so many things to consider, from layout to appliances to finishes.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start to design your dream kitchen:

  1. Functionality: The most important thing to consider when designing your kitchen is how it will function for you and your family. Think about your daily routine and how you use your kitchen. Do you love to cook and entertain, or are you more of a takeout and microwave kind of person? Do you have a lot of people coming in and out of your kitchen, or is it just you and one other person? These factors will help determine the layout and features you'll want to include in your kitchen.

  2. Layout: The layout of your kitchen will be determined by the shape and size of the space, as well as your functional needs. A common layout is the "work triangle," which consists of the refrigerator, stove, and sink. These three points should be spaced out in a way that allows for easy movement between them. Other things to consider when laying out your kitchen include the placement of your pantry, any islands or peninsulas, and the location of electrical outlets and plumbing.

  3. Appliances: The appliances you choose will depend on your budget and your needs. If you love to cook, you may want to invest in higher-end appliances with more features. If you're on a budget, there are plenty of affordable options that can still get the job done. Consider energy efficiency, as well as the size and placement of your appliances. You'll also want to consider the type of cooktop you want – gas, electric, or induction – and whether you want a built-in oven or a range. And don’t forget about the microwave placement and style of range hood!

  4. Finishes: The finishes you choose for your kitchen can really make a statement and tie the whole look together. Consider the style of your home and choose finishes that complement it. Some decisions include countertop and backsplash materials, finishes of plumbing, lighting and hardware, material and colours used to make up the cabinetry face and interior. It goes on for what feels like forever!

  5. Storage: No matter the size of your kitchen, you can never have too much storage. Consider adding as many drawers as you can, a pantry when possible, or even a separate area for coffee, serving or large appliances. When planning your storage, don’t forget to measure the items you already have - you would hate to spend all the money and not have your favourite coffee machine, soda stream or go-to crock pot actually fit anywhere!

Designing a kitchen can be overwhelming, but with some careful planning and consideration, you can create a space that is both functional and beautiful. If you need help planning your next kitchen - reach out here for help :)
