Selection Series: Interior Door Hardware

The Selection Series is where I pick a common item you might have to select when renovating or building and I share my tips and tricks learned over the years!

Today we are chatting about all things hardware.

I like to start off by looking at websites like Schlage and Emtek for inspiration. You’ll likely land on one of them based on the styles or finishes they offer. For example, they have very different gold shades!

Once you land on a brand, decide if you would like a knob or a lever. I find levers are more accessibility friendly for kids and elderly to use.

Next, ask yourself if you need a passage, privacy or dummy knob/lever. If you are doing multiple doors, you will likely need a mix of all three. For example, passage is great for a laundry room, privacy for bathrooms and primary bedrooms, and dummy for double door closets.

Now the fun part - the finish! For a cohesive look within your home, you could opt to match your plumbing, lighting and/or cabinet door hardware. If you are going to do that, just remember that not all finishes are created equal. For example, a polished nickel or brass on your Moen faucet or Hinkley light fixture may not look the same as the polished nickel or brass on the Emtek knob you choose. You can absolutely use this as an opportunity to bring in something fun and different - I have a client right now doing crystal!

Another fun part is the style - there are so many different shapes and profiles of knobs and levers, but there are also rosettes!

Here are a few combos I love:

Lastly, dont forget to match the hinges and door stoppers - I dont want to see a chrome hinge with a black lever LOL!
